Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Tuesday 23.01.2024

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Avoid areas with wind slabs. Especially where these wind slabs are resting on a hard melt-freeze crust. Here, triggering will be easy. Avoid steep terrain in areas with wet and loose snow.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 22. January 2024

Mountain weather

Monday 22. January 2024

4-8 mm precipitation. Rain up to 300 m a.s.l Monday night. Moderate gale from south, changing to moderate gale from the southeast during renoon. -7 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 23. January 2024

3 mm precipitation, up to 8 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 500 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Breeze from southeast, changing to strong breeze from the northwest during renoon. -7 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
